Did you know that Microsoft is changing the default Microsoft 365 authentication method from 1 September 2026? See the Security section below for more information and what this means for your organisation.
For Microsoft Publisher users, a reminder that Publisher reaches end of life in October 2026. If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, Publisher will no longer be available for download or installation after this date. Microsoft is Changing How You Verify Your Identity
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/entra/identity/authentication/concept-sms-voice-retirement
If you use Microsoft 365 and currently receive a text message (SMS) or phone call to verify your identity when signing in, there are some important changes on the horizon.
Microsoft has announced that it will gradually phase out its own SMS and voice-based multi-factor authentication (MFA) services and instead encourage users to move to more secure authentication methods known as passkeys and authentication apps. Microsoft considers text messages and phone calls to be less secure because they can be vulnerable to phishing scams, SIM-swapping and other forms of cyber attack.
Starting from September 2026, users who currently rely on SMS or phone calls for MFA may begin seeing prompts encouraging them to set up a passkey or another modern authentication method. By February 2027, Microsoft will stop providing SMS and voice authentication services directly, meaning organisations will need to use alternative methods or arrange third-party services if they still wish to use text messages or phone calls for verification.
So what is a passkey? Think of it as a safer and easier replacement for passwords and security codes. A passkey typically uses the built-in security features on your device, such as a fingerprint, face recognition or device PIN, to confirm that it's really you signing in. Instead of typing in a code from a text message, you simply approve the sign-in using your device.
For most users, the best way to prepare is to ensure you have the Microsoft Authenticator app installed on your phone and follow any prompts from your organisation to register a passkey or update your security settings. These newer authentication methods are not only more secure, but they can also make signing in faster and more convenient.
If you're unsure which authentication methods you're currently using, or you'd like assistance setting up Microsoft Authenticator or passkeys, please contact our team for assistance

and About |

Below are some highlights of what the team has been up to over the past month.
David and Paul squeezed in a whirlwind overnight trip to Sydney. Between meetings, catch-ups and travel, they were so busy that not a single photo was taken... you'll just have to trust us that they were actually there!
David is planning another trip to Sydney at the end of September. If you'd like to catch up while he's in town, please let him know.

Industry Expo and Seminars
The SA based team attended the Leader Trade Show at the Adelaide Convention Centre, where we had the opportunity to catch up with vendors, explore the latest technology, and learn about new solutions that can benefit our clients.
To top off a great evening, two of our techs (Sean and Lara) were lucky enough to win Ubiquiti Instant Camera Kits as door prizes! |
|
|
Ongoing Training
Both Noor and David were expanding their knowledge around Ubiquiti and general networking.
While David attended the recent in-person "UniFi Best Practices" workshop in Adelaide, Noor was continuing his UniFi education online, recently completing two Ubiquiti UniFi training courses.
Investing in ongoing training helps ensure our team remains at the forefront of UniFi networking solutions.

Power Protection
Last week, David, Sean (hiding behind the camera) and Stefan had the opportunity to catch up with our CyberPower rep, John, over lunch at the iconic Coopers Brewery.
While UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems may not be the most glamorous piece of technology, they play a critical role in protecting business-critical equipment, maintaining uptime, and safeguarding valuable data during power disruptions.
Staying informed about the latest developments and best practices in power protection helps us continue delivering reliable solutions for both our business and our clients.

Still Using Windows 10? Here is Why You are Putting Your Business at Risk
|
|
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft support on October 14, 2025, which means it no longer gets security updates. The computers still work, but any new flaw found in Windows 10 will never be fixed, which makes them easier to attack and can cause problems with compliance and cyber insurance.
You have three options: upgrade eligible PCs to Windows 11 for free, pay for Extended Security Updates as a short-term bridge, or replace machines too old to upgrade.

| What To Do When the Internet is Down? |
|
The tools that run your business, like M365, your accounting app, or your booking system, are reliable most of the time, but they do go down. When one does, work can stop for hours, and you often can't do anything but wait for the provider to fix it.
Our latest article explains how a simple plan keeps your team working and your customers informed while you wait for the Internet to come back online.

| How to Spot the Next Generation of Scam Emails |
|
Scammers are now using AI to write their phishing emails, so the spelling and grammar mistakes that were used to give them away, are gone.
